Bearded dragon morphs look like a secret language until you notice the trick: a name like Hypo Trans Leatherback Citrus is really three separate kinds of word. One describes a colour line that breeders selected for over generations. One describes the scale type. And one or two describe pigment genes that are either present or not. Sort each word into its bucket and every listing on every breeder site reads the same way. This guide walks through the buckets, the traits inside each, how each is inherited, which ones change how you care for the animal — and the part most guides skip: what you can actually verify by looking, versus what only the paperwork knows.
How to read a bearded dragon morph name
Read it as three layers, usually written pigment genes first, scale type in the middle, colour last:
- Pigment genes — hypo, trans (translucent), zero, witblits, and their combinations. These are single genes with a known inheritance pattern. A dragon either has them or doesn't, and a normal-looking dragon can carry one silently.
- Scale type — classic, leatherback, silkback, dunner, and the striped variants. These change the texture and pattern of the skin rather than the pigment.
- Colour line — red, citrus, orange, yellow, tangerine, and breeder brand names on top of those. Colour is not a single gene. It's the result of pairing the brightest animals for generations, which is why two "reds" from different breeders can look nothing alike and why a colour name tells you nothing about what the dragon carries.
So "Hypo Trans Leatherback Citrus" means: two recessive pigment genes showing (hypo and trans), reduced scales (leatherback), from a yellow-orange colour line (citrus). "Classic Red" means: no pigment genes showing, normal scales, red line. That's the whole grammar.
Pigment genes: hypo, trans, zero, witblits, paradox
These are the traits with real genetics behind them, and all of the common ones are recessive — a dragon needs two copies to show the trait. One copy makes it a carrier, written "het."
Hypomelanistic (hypo). Reduced dark pigment. The dragon looks brighter and cleaner, with less black and brown muddying the colour. The classic tell is the nails: hypo dragons have clear, see-through nails instead of dark ones. It's the most common pigment gene and it's in most of the vivid colour lines.
Translucent (trans). Reduced white pigment, which makes the scales look slightly see-through and the colours underneath show more. Trans dragons often have solid dark eyes with no visible iris, and hatchlings frequently have a bluish tint to the belly and eyelids that fades with age. Combined with hypo it produces some of the most saturated dragons in the hobby.
Zero. Patternless and colourless — a silvery white to grey dragon with no markings. Zeros are recessive and visually unmistakable. Hypo zeros are paler and whiter; non-hypo zeros keep some grey.
Witblits. Also patternless, also recessive, but a separate gene from zero: a witblits keeps a muted single colour — tan, peach, pastel — rather than going silver. The line originated in South Africa. Because zero and witblits are different genes, a dragon can carry both; one showing both is called a wero, and it takes two double-recessive parents or a lot of patience to produce.
Paradox. Not a gene you can breed for. A paradox dragon has random patches of colour or pattern that don't belong to its morph — a splash of orange on a zero, a dark blotch on a trans. Paradox markings most often show up in translucent combinations and don't pass reliably to offspring, which is exactly why they're prized.
Scale types: classic, leatherback, silkback, dunner, stripes
Classic (normal). The wild-type look: a full back of spiky scales and tubercles, a pattern of bands and blotches. Every other scale type is described as a change from this.
Leatherback. Smaller, smoother scales down the back and sides while the spikes along the beard and flanks stay. The smoother skin shows colour more vividly, which is why so many high-colour dragons are leatherbacks. Leatherback is co-dominant (incomplete dominant): one copy gives you a leatherback, and two copies give you the next entry.
Silkback. Two copies of the leatherback gene. No scales at all — the skin is completely smooth, almost like a gecko's, and the colour is at its most intense. It comes with real care costs, covered below, and some keepers and breeders avoid producing them for that reason.
Dunner. A dominant trait that scrambles scale direction: scales point sideways or backwards instead of all lying the same way, feel rougher, and the usual banded pattern breaks up into spots and speckles. Dunners also tend to have more conical scales and a scattered pattern on the belly. It stacks with the pigment genes — a hypo trans dunner is a common combination.
Genetic stripe. A dominant trait producing clean, unbroken lines running down the back and often the tail, where a classic would have bands. Striped dragons keep normal scales, so the trait combines with leatherback and with any pigment gene.
You may also see German giant in listings. It's a size line from a large import decades ago, not a gene you can test for, and it has been bred into so many lines that the label rarely means much today. Treat it as a claim about size, not a morph.

Which morphs change how you care for a dragon
Most of this is cosmetic. Hypo, trans, zero, dunner and the colour lines are cared for exactly like a classic — same heat gradient, same UVB, same diet, as laid out in our bearded dragon care guide. Two exceptions are worth knowing before you buy.
Silkbacks need a different routine. With no scales, the skin dehydrates faster, burns more easily under a basking bulb or a strong UVB tube, sheds in stubborn patches, and gets scraped by rough hides and rocks. Keepers typically run the bulbs further away, soak more often, moisturise the skin, keep humidity a little higher, and choose smooth decor. A silkback is not a beginner's dragon, and if you want the smooth look, a leatherback gives you most of it with none of the overhead.
Translucents may be light-sensitive. Some keepers report that trans dragons, particularly those with fully dark eyes, squint or hide under very bright lighting. It's anecdotal rather than established, but it's worth watching for and giving the dragon more shaded cover if you see it.
Nothing about a morph changes what a healthy weight looks like. A 500-gram zero and a 500-gram classic are the same animal underneath, and the growth curve in our bearded dragon growth chart applies to all of them.
What you can see, and what only the paperwork knows
This is the part that matters if you ever plan to breed, or simply want to know what you've got. Every trait in the table above has a visible form — but the recessive ones also have an invisible form. A dragon with one copy of hypo looks completely normal. It is "het hypo," and it will produce hypo babies if paired with another hypo or het hypo. You cannot tell by looking. The only source of that information is the breeder's record of the parents, which is why a good listing reads something like "Hypo Trans Leatherback, 66% het zero" — and why "66%" is an honest statement of odds from the pairing, not a measurement of this particular animal.
Practically, that means two things. First, if you bought a dragon without lineage, describe what you see and don't guess at hets — "leatherback, clear nails, dark eyes" is a more useful description than a morph name you can't back up. Second, if you do have the paperwork, write it down somewhere that won't get lost, because the morph names of the parents are the only thing that makes your dragon's genetics knowable later.

You can identify some traits by eye and others only from paperwork. Visible tells: clear or see-through nails point to hypo; solid dark eyes and, in babies, a bluish belly point to translucent; a smooth back with small scales is leatherback; no scales at all is silkback; a silvery patternless dragon is zero and a muted, patternless tan or pastel one is witblits. What you can't see is what the dragon carries — a normal-looking dragon can be het for hypo, trans or zero — and that comes only from the breeder's records of the parents. Without lineage, describe what you see and don't guess at hets.
What is the rarest bearded dragon morph?
There's no official ranking, but the morphs that need two recessive genes to show are the hardest to produce: wero (zero plus witblits) and combinations like hypo trans zero. Paradox dragons — random patches of unexpected colour that don't breed true — are rare by definition because nobody can produce them on purpose. Colour lines like red or citrus are not rare; they're selectively bred, not single genes.
Are silkback bearded dragons harder to care for?
Yes. A silkback has two copies of the leatherback gene and no scales, so its skin is unprotected: it dehydrates and burns more easily under heat and UVB, sheds in awkward patches, and is scraped by rough decor. Keepers typically run higher humidity, soak more often, moisturise the skin, and keep bulbs further away. If you're choosing a first dragon, a leatherback gives you the smooth look with none of that overhead.
What does het mean in a bearded dragon morph name?
Het is short for heterozygous: the dragon carries one copy of a recessive gene but doesn't show the trait. A dragon sold as het hypo looks normal but can produce hypo babies if paired with another hypo or het hypo. A percentage in front, like 66% het, means the breeder can't be sure from the pairing that this particular baby inherited the gene — 66% is the odds, not a certainty. That's why the parents' morphs are worth recording even for a pet.
