If you want to track your time in daylight and you own a recent Apple Watch, you are probably already doing it without knowing. The watch's ambient light sensor estimates it in the background, and the number is sitting in the Health app right now under Search → Other Data → Time in Daylight. No button to press, no workout to start.
This guide covers where that number comes from, which watches produce it, why it sometimes reads zero, how to read it honestly, and what to do if you do not own a watch at all.
What "Time in Daylight" actually measures
Apple's own description is one sentence: the ambient light sensor in your Apple Watch automatically estimates how much time you spend outdoors in daylight each day. That sensor is the same component that decides how bright your screen should be. It reads the light level at your wrist, and when that level looks like outdoor daylight rather than a lit room, the clock runs.
Two things follow from that, and both matter more than they sound.
First, Apple calls it an estimate, not a measurement. It is inferred from a light reading, not from anything about you.
Second — and this is the part people get wrong — it is a measure of brightness, not of UV. A bright overcast morning in November and a clear hour at noon in July can both register as daylight while doing completely different things to your skin and to your vitamin D. Time in Daylight is a good proxy for "did you go outside". It is not a sun exposure number, and it will not tell you whether you are about to burn.
Which Apple Watch models track time in daylight
The feature depends on hardware Apple started using for this purpose with Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation). Every model after those carries it too. Earlier watches have an ambient light sensor but do not produce this metric, so if you are on a Series 5 or older there is nothing to switch on — you will need the manual route further down this page.
You also need the watch to be paired and worn. Time in Daylight is a wrist measurement; your iPhone does not generate it on its own, no matter how long it sits in your pocket outside.
How to see your time in daylight
- Open the Health app on your iPhone.
- Tap the Search tab.
- Tap Other Data.
- Tap Time in Daylight.
- Tap Add to Favorites while you are there, so it appears on the Summary screen instead of being four taps deep forever.
The chart defaults to today. Switch to the week or month view — a single day tells you almost nothing, and the weekly shape is where the interesting pattern lives.
Why your time in daylight shows zero
This is the most common complaint about the metric, and it usually has a boring cause. Work down the list in order.

How to read the number honestly
Apple sets no goal for this metric, and there is no universal right answer — what daylight does for you depends on latitude, season, skin type and which effect you care about. So resist the urge to find a target in an article and chase it.
Do this instead: wear the watch for seven days and change nothing. That week is your real baseline, and for most people who work indoors it is a genuinely unpleasant surprise — workdays often come back close to lightless, with the entire weekly total earned on Saturday and Sunday. Then set a goal slightly above your own baseline. A number you will actually hit on a Tuesday beats an aspirational one you miss all week.
The second honest caveat: minutes outdoors and vitamin D are not the same quantity. Vitamin D synthesis depends on UVB, which varies with the sun's angle, the season, cloud cover, altitude and your skin type. In a northern winter you can log a very respectable hour of daylight and produce essentially none. That is the gap the Health app does not close for you.
Turning daylight minutes into something you can act on

Tracking time in daylight without an Apple Watch
If you have an older watch or none at all, you cannot get the automatic metric, but you are not stuck.
