DishPal Privacy Policy
Weekly menu, grocery list and kitchen
Overview
DishPal ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what the DishPal app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and the DishPal Chrome extension (the "Service"), do with your information.
DishPal has no account, no ads and no analytics, and we run no server that receives your data. Your content stays on your devices and in your own iCloud.
1. Information the App Handles
1.1 Content You Create
- Lists, recipes, weekly menus and kitchen inventory, including items, amounts, expiry dates and tags.
- Photos you choose to scan: screenshots or photos of a recipe, or of a fridge shelf. They are read into text and items; DishPal does not keep a copy of the photo. Photos are picked with the system photo picker, so DishPal never gets access to your whole library.
- Voice input: when you speak dishes, iOS speech recognition turns them into text.
- Settings: preferences such as stores, category order and pantry staples.
1.2 Information We Do Not Collect
- Personal identifiers (name, email, phone)
- Location or contacts
- Advertising identifiers or tracking data
- Usage analytics
1.3 Chrome Extension
- Permissions: The extension uses the
activeTabpermission to save a recipe from the current page, and only reads the page when you click the extension. - Storage: Extension data is stored with
chrome.storage.local, which stays in your browser.
2. Where Your Data Is Stored
- On your device, inside the app's sandbox.
- In your own iCloud account, if iCloud is on, to sync between your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. We cannot see or access your iCloud data.
- Family sharing (Premium) uses Apple's iCloud sharing. The lists, menu, recipes and kitchen you share are visible to the people you invite, and you can stop sharing at any time.
3. AI Processing
AI features (turning dishes into a list, importing a recipe, filling a menu, scanning a shelf, cooking steps) send the text or photo you provide to the AI you use:
- Apple Intelligence (default): runs on your device, or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which Apple designs so that your data is not stored or made accessible to Apple.
- Your own API key (optional): if you add a key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or DeepSeek, those requests go directly from your device to that provider and are handled under its privacy policy and terms. Your key is stored in the iOS Keychain and is never sent to us.
We do not receive, log or store any AI request or response.
4. Permissions
- Camera (optional): to read recipes, shopping lists and fridge shelves from photos you take.
- Microphone and Speech Recognition (optional): when you speak the dishes you want to cook.
- Reminders (optional): only when you export a list to Reminders.
- Notifications (optional): for expiry reminders, if you turn them on.
You can change any of these in iOS Settings at any time.
5. Sharing and Third Parties
- We do not sell, rent or share your data, and we use no analytics or advertising services.
- Apple services (iCloud/CloudKit, StoreKit for purchases, Apple Intelligence) are subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
- An AI provider you choose with your own key receives only the requests you make.
- We may disclose information only if required by law; since we hold none of your content, there is normally nothing for us to disclose.
6. Your Rights and Deletion
- View, edit or delete any list, recipe, menu or item in the app at any time.
- Deleting the app removes its data from the device; iCloud data can be removed in iOS Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Leaving or stopping a family share removes access for the others.
7. Children's Privacy
DishPal does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 and has no accounts or data collection of its own.
8. Changes to This Policy
We will update this page and the date above when DishPal's handling of data changes. Significant changes may also be noted in the app's release notes.
9. Applicable Laws
- GDPR (EU), CCPA (California)
- Apple App Store Review Guidelines
- Other applicable local data protection laws
